Introduction

The Device Characterization Lab (DCL) is located in 407 Cory Hall and provides the capability for conducting measurements on wafers as well as packaged devices. The lab is complete with several probe stations, some of which have variable temperature settings (hot and cold chucks). Most are equipped with a computer to manage and automate specific measurements. The lab is also complete with measurement instruments such as IV/CV meters, MHz Signal Generators, Spectrum Analyzers, and Semiconductor Parameter Analyzers.

Getting Access

1. Get trained by a qualified user of the probe station. First, you should watch a qualified user use the probe station. Then, you should have a qualified user watch you use the probe station.

2. Contact the superuser of the probe station. Schedule an oral exam so the superuser can watch you use the probe station.

3. Once you have been qualified for a probe station, fill out a 'Cardkey Request Form' for 407 Cory Hall. The request form can be obtained from 253 Cory Hall. Once one of the Device Group professors has signed the form, submit the it to 253 Cory Hall to get access to the Device Characterization Lab. A $20 deposit may be required if you don't have a cardkey yet.

4. FOR THE CASCADE PROBE STATION:
Fill out the application found
here. Write an explanation of what measurements you plan to perform and why you need to use the Cascade probe station instead of the general use probe stations. Submit this application to the superuser of the Cascade station. The superuser will read over the application and approve or disapprove the request.

Device Characterization Lab Rules

1. All users must obtain approval to use the lab.
All users must get a device group professor (Profs. Hu, King, Bokor or Subramanian) for cardkey access.
All users must pass a qualification test from the superuser of the probe station they want to use.

2. You can only use a probe station if you are qualified.
Log all use of the probe stations in the provided log books.

3. If something is broken, notify the superuser of that probe station.
Log all faults in the probe station log books to inform all other users.

4. If you move something, return it to its original position.

5. If you need to borrow a piece of equipment from the DCL, you must obtain permission from the lab manager and superuser of that station.
You will need to write a note recording your name, email, date, what time you borrowed the machine and what time you'll return it.

6. All probe stations are to be MOS compatible. Any questionable materials will require permission from the lab manager and superuser of that probe station.
Absolutely no GOLD or SILVER should be allowed in or near any probe station.

7. Failure to follow any rules will result in at least a loss of access to 407 Cory Hall.

8. All users must clean up after every use.
All users must participate in an annual cleaning of the DCL.

Any questions or uncertainties should be first directed to the superuser of the probe station. If they cannot be found, you can go to the backup superuser or lab manager.

Reservation Policy

Currently, the Device Characterization Lab has a whiteboard in which qualified users can reserve up to 4 hour time slots.
We are in the process of implementing an online reservation system. You can find the website here:

ONLINE RESERVATION SYSTEM FOR PROBE STATIONS

The Group Name is UCB_DEVICE
Your user name and password will be provided to you by the lab manager once you have become qualified on one of the probe stations.
